Philosophy

Philosophy literally means ‘love of wisdom’. It is an attempt to arrive at a rational conception of reality as a whole. It is a synoptic view of the universe. The syllabus for Under–Graduate course framed by the University of Calcutta focuses on an array of topics like Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, Psychology, Logic, Analytical Philosophy, Ethics, Religion and such in the context of an overall effort to present concepts, technics and models which will help undergraduate students pursuing the course to give a better knowledge of the subject. The syllabus is divided into modules to help the students follow a step–by–step approach to the subject with suitable real–world cases, examples and exercises. Thus the syllabus helps to sharpen the student’s mind, communicate skills and understand the subject with greater ease. Recently the syllabus has been revised to incorporate topics from contemporary philosophy which will help the students to develop an integrative vision as well as an analytic insight into various issues.

          Program Outcome:

PO: 1- Synoptic view of Universe- The objective of the BA Course in Philosophy is to help students arrive at a rational conception of reality as a whole. The course focuses on an array of topics like Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Social & Political Philosophy, Psychology, Logic, Ethics & Analytic Philosophy and such in the context of an overall effort to present concepts, techniques and models which will help the students to gain a better knowledge of the subject.

PO: 2- Effective Communication Skills- The syllabus helps to sharpen the student’s mind, communication skills (through students’ seminars) and understand the subject with greater case.

PO: 3- Logical Thinking- To help students combine sound logical doctrine with sound pedagogy and provide illustrative material suggestive of the role of logic in every department of thought.

PO: 4- Scope of Employment- To help students pursue higher studies, research, teaching and training programs which will thereby give them a better confidence to face the competitive job-market.

PSO: 1- A better grasp of subject-matter (Philosophy) – To enable students effectively understand Philosophy which is the Mother of all sciences and its relation to other social sciences.

PSO: 2- Practical Approach- To help students apply theoretical principles to contemporary problems and thereby effectively handles issues in day to day life.

          Course Outcome:

CO: 1- A thorough understanding of major areas of philosophical inquiry, dealing with issues such as duties to future people, resource conservation, species and wilderness preservation, the relevance of ecology to ethics, ecofeminism and the tension between political liberalism and environmentalism.

CO: 2- It helps the students to understand education and economic empowerment of women alone can bring about positive change and reduce gender bias.

CO: 3- To help students to gain an awareness of a living based on a distinction between our animal demands and the demands of the higher faculties of human life worthy of the destructive nature of man.
